Grades 1-8

The Foreign Language curriculum embraces a broad spectrum of communication skills utilizing the four essential areas of foreign language education: listening, writing, reading and speaking. The program offers a vision of what students should know and be able to do with a second language and provides rich curricular and cultural experiences. The goal is to develop positive attitudes and excitement toward learning the Spanish language and the traditions of the Hispanic people. Through the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing students are able to broaden their awareness, acceptance, and understanding of this abounding culture. Additionally, elements of the Catholic faith tradition are integrated into the curriculum in order to provide a meaningful language and cultural experience within the context of the Catholic faith.

Grade 1

Listening and speaking skills are introduced in an entertaining environment that will spark creativity and use in everyday situations. Students will learn basic vocabulary, simple directions and commands, songs, prayers, colors, and numbers 1-10. The communication of simple questions and answers will be mastered.

Grade 2

Students refine their oral and written skills. More extensive vocabulary will be taught in each topic area. Sentence structure and expressions for everyday communication are introduced. Greetings, courtesy expressions, and The Pledge of Allegiance are mastered.

Grade 3

Writing skills will be introduced with an emphasis on grammar rules and sentence structure. Students will begin to build an extensive vocabulary and learn basic verb conjugation. Cultural traditions & customs will be introduced. Students from this point forward will be expected to keep a Spanish notebook/journal and create their own vocabulary flashcards.

Grade 4

Speaking skills will be practiced through response to discussion topics and oral presentations. Emphasis will be placed on the conjugation of present tense verbs and the writing of short paragraphs. Cultural themes continue to be integrated.

Grade 5

Preterit and imperfect tenses are introduced. Speaking and writing skills will be practiced through creative projects and oral presentations. Research of Spanish websites in the technology lab and cross-curriculum teaching is integrated.

Grade 6

All students take Latin.

Grade 7

Future, subjunctive, and conditional tenses are introduced. Speaking and writing skills will
continue to be practiced through current event topics. Appropriate level
Spanish magazines and newspapers will be incorporated to inspire conversation. Cultural themes and projects will continue to be integrated to complete the
understanding of the Spanish customs and traditions.

Grade 8

Proficiency should allow students to read, write, and understand conversations and stories in the target language. Students should have a mastery of grammar and vocabulary to engage in daily conversation and discuss events in the past, present, and future tenses. Students will understand and appreciate the traditions and culture of the Hispanic people.
